Submission Guidelines

The Sow's Ear welcomes submissions of poetry, art, and crossovers.  Guest columns and book reviews are usually by the editors' invitation, but feel free to ask us.

Occasionally we present work by writers who have never published before (rarely by youth), if we think their voice has exceptional promise.

Include an SASE and send all submissions to:

Kristin Zimet

POETRY: The Sow's Ear welcomes submissions of fine poetry of any style and length.  We want work that is carefully crafted, keenly felt, and freshly perceived.  We like poems with voice, a sense of place, delight in language, and a meaning that unfolds.

Send up to five poems, double-spaced, with a brief bio and SASE.  Simultaneous submissions are OK if you keep us swiftly informed.  Poems receive more than one level of screening, but we strive to respond within three months.  We send 2 copies of the issue on publication, and all rights revert to authors at that time.

COMMUNITY OF POETS: Each issue features works by a "community of poets".  Feel free to define  community" in any creative way.  It might mean mentors with their protégés, members of a workshop, writers from a shared region, a set of friends, or a group joined by a common interest . . .

Expect us to select as few as two or three poems to represent the entire community.

ART: We feature artwork on our cover and alongside the poems.  Send black-and-white, high-contrast drawings or photographs.  Your work may have to be reduced.  Supply a brief bio and big enough SASE.  Please do not send your only copy!

CROSS-OVERS: We look for works that marry poetry to other media.  Some examples are:
  • Musical settings of poems (please include written permission from the poet) or lead sheets for songs with excellent original lyrics
  • Art that incorporates words
  • Prose/poetry partnerships
